Shane McGrath (DCU) retained his individual driver title but only after successfully holding off DIT’s Graham Higginbotham whose late surge just fell short of catching McGrath.

The DCU racer and 2011 leading driver went into the evening’s final round with what was considered a comfortable 10 pts lead but in the end was thankful to his teammate Jeff Dalton who held off Higginbotham to take the win and in turn hand the title to McGrath who finished down in seventh.

Dalton’s win cemented his third place in the driver’s table and in turn ensured DCU retained the team championship from DIT. CIT’s local knowledge proved a significant advantage with four of their five drivers finishing in the top 16, propelling them from seventh to third in the team standings.

The day got off to a perfect start for IT Carlow with a hard fought 21 – 10 win over a committed NCI team in the Division 3 final. This victory was quickly followed up with a 20 points to 8 win over ITT Dublin although the final scoreline does not reflect the huge effort put in by the IT Tallaght lads.

IT Carlow’s dominance of this year’s league was complete with a brilliant 23 – 20 win over Athlone IT in the Division 1 final. The final scoreline of 23 – 20 is a good indicator to how close this match was throughout with Carlow just holding out in what was an excellent game of rugby.

Next up now for IT Carlow Rugby club in the CUSAI IRFU Men’s Colleges’ Leagues is the final of the Fresher’s O Boyle Cup where they take on NUI Maynooth.
